Sister Dreamers

For me mentors have always been an essential part of my creative process way before I ever entered a classroom or studio. They were family, elders, neighbors and friends way before the teachers and fellow artists.

In LA, I became a mentor, inspiring others sometimes without fully knowing who was inspired by my artistic practice. Lauren Halsey is one such artist who not only celebrates her inspirations from family and community, but she creates portraits of them in her monumental piece known as “Sister Dreamers”.

It’s a full circle moment for me when mentor and mentee inspire each other.

I’m way in the back of this photo, but I’m standing beneath the location of my portrait that is on the top of the interior wall of Halsey’s temple structure.

I’m honored to be standing in the front row, third from the left next to Rosie Lee Hooks, Director of the Watts Towers Arts Center as well as Lauren Halsey  and many others. I’m always inspired by what is possible through art.

On the upper inner wall of the Sister Dreamer Monument is Lauren Halsey’s relief portrait of me next to her “Mother Ship”. I’m awed and inspired to be apart of Halsey’s work!
